Chelo: Women's football is on the rise but there's still a long way to go

The former Rojiblanca player and current UD Almería Women 'B' head coach talks about the FIFA Women's World Cup and the latest news on her girls youth side

Chelo, former UD Almería Women player and current UD Almería Women 'B' head coach has popped in at the UDA Radio studio to talk about the Spain Women squad as they qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup final and her new season as a head coach. After replaying the narration of Olga Carmona's goal, which sealed the passage of Jorge Vilda's squad to the Women's World Cup final, she confessed: 'It was amazing, in fact when I heard it again, it made my hair stand on an end as they're making history. Sweden Women levelled it up very soon and they got very nervous. Witnessing Olga's goal was spectacular; now wishing that they win the final,' she assured.

Chelo has showed herself optimistic regarding the FIFA Women's World Cup predictions: 'I think they've had a great championship, the vibes are great indeed. Any fan of the Spanish Women squad should have full confidence that they have big chances to win the tournament against England Women.'

The booming popularity of the female game continues to outstrip. 'Women's football is on the rise but there's still a long way to go,' Chelo assured.

On the other hand, she has spoken about her objectives at the helm of UD Almería Women 'B': 'The girls 'B' team always have a main objective: training and trying to provide the first team with homegrown players but obviously another purpose is to compete and try to win the league, without forgetting to enjoy, which is essential in my opinion.'

'We've made several signings and some under-14s and under-16s players have progressed to the second team. The squad is almost complete with the absence of someone in goal,' she concluded.
